Free Head Shot Edit Hack for Business Professionals

If you’re like me when I was just starting out, you might get an exciting email or job opportunity that suddenly requires a professional photo. And then panic sets in: “Oh no, I don’t have a headshot! I can’t afford to schedule a photo session!”
Sure, you can use AI tools to generate or retouch photos, but those can sometimes cost more than your budget allows. Here’s my favorite no-cost solution.

Step 1: Take a Simple Photo

Find a neutral background, think plain wall or uncluttered space. Wear a neutral-colored shirt (black works beautifully). Ladies, if you’re a little older like me, a turtleneck is your best friend for these shots. Have someone snap a picture for you. If no one’s around, set up your selfie stick and go for it. Take a few angles until you find one you like. No need for fancy lighting or a professional photographer, just keep it clean and simple.

Step 2: Head to a Makeup Website

Here’s the magic part. Go to a makeup brand’s website. My favorite is Maybelline (no sponsorship here, I just genuinely like it). You don’t even need an account. Just upload your photo and start experimenting. You can add eyeliner, lipstick, foundation, or whatever you’d normally wear. Apply it in the same order you would in real life: primer, foundation, blush, the works. Guys, don’t be shy. It’s fun to play around, and no one’s judging.

Step 3: Fine-Tune the Details

One of the coolest features? You can even correct little quirks. For example, one of my eyes has a slight scar from a childhood tumble off a tractor (I’m from Tennessee, so of course, there’s a tractor in the story!). The Maybelline tool let me subtly even it out with just a few clicks. When you’re happy with the look, simply download the updated picture. That’s it! Want to make it a bit edgier? Download it and convert it to black and white.

Why I Love This Trick

It’s simple, free, and gives you a polished, confident photo you can share on LinkedIn, company bios, or any professional opportunity that pops up. No need to stress about scheduling a photographer or spending money you don’t have.

I’m always here to help!
